Influence of Temperature Adjustments to EVA Adhesive On the Pull-out Resistance of Uncoated Paper Grades Used for the Production of Perfect-bound Book Blocks

Perfect binding is the most widely used binding process in today’s printing industry. Aspects such as materials, machine set-up, and production parameters are crucial for reproducible high-quality products. This research therefore investigates temperature adjustments of adhesive and their influence on the pull-out strength of EVA perfect bound book blocks made from uncoated paper grades.
In various tests, substrate characteristics and pull test suitability of the chosen paper grades were determined, before binding three of the paper types with machine temperature settings of 160 °C, 170 °C and 180 °C. Subsequently, their page pull-out strength was tested on a QLibro PPT Newton 451 pull tester in order to achieve comparable results. These results indicate that temperature deviations during machine binding of the chosen substrates only result in insignificant changes for the aforementioned temperature range and the adhesive employed. Substrate properties however seem to heavily influence the pull-out strength. A visual investigation of SEM-images of the book block spine supports this thesis.
