The ISCC is the principal professional society in the field of color in the United States, encompassing the arts, sciences and industry, pursuant to our Aims and Purposes. Other national organizations with an interest in color are Member-Bodies of the Council; additionally, individuals can join when unaffiliated with any particular organization. Individual members are the largest single group.

The history of the Council dates to its founding in 1931, with the goal of advancing the knowledge of color as it relates to art, science, and industry. Each of these fields enriches the others, furthering the general objective of color education.
