Immersive Media: The New Language of Enchantment

Immersion is the moment that your audience members become participants in your communication or narrative. It is when they are surrounded by a three-dimensional experience, where their sense of touch joins sight and sound. While video games, virtual reality and augmented reality technologies have inched us ever closer to true immersion, many of these have come up short due to sensory confusion or abstraction. In recent years, Starlight Runner Entertainment CEO Jeff Gomez has worked with clients such as the Walt Disney Company, to revive the graphic arts as a vital component in dynamic immersive entertainment projects. For the first time in this exclusive talk, Gomez will share new techniques and a new language for immersive media. He will present case studies in story world development and narrative design that leverages graphic arts technologies to help create compelling experiences that fully surround, enchant, and thrill each participant, and can be perceived differently by each audience member.

Imaging Cultural Heritage in 3D

The Minneapolis Institute of Art enriches the community by collecting, preserving and making accessible outstanding works of art from the world’s diverse cultures. In an ongoing effort to share our collections worldwide for study and enjoyment, we have been making virtual 3D models of rare objects using photogrammetry. This image-based modeling technique can record measurable geometric data and precise surface texture information, but capturing true color accuracy and realistic reflective properties remain elusive. This presentation will review the opportunities and challenges involved in employing new methods of documentation to achieve museum quality results.

Interacting with Color: The Art and Teaching of Josef Albers

2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus art school in Germany. The Bauhaus concept of combining art, architecture, and craft (Gesamtkunstwerk) greatly influenced the modernist movement. Of the many famous teachers at the Bauhaus – Gropius, Klee, Kandinsky, Itten – none has had a larger impact on art education in the US than Josef Albers. Tracing the life of Albers as he moved from the Bauhaus to Black Mountain College and finally to Yale, Albers Foundation educator Fritz Horstman will shed light on the artist’s influences, aspects of his pedagogy and his fascination with color. He will discuss what Albers meant when he said that his role as a teacher was “to open eyes.”

This Is Your Brain On Paper

More than half the human brain is devoted to processing sensory experiences. Touch, in particular, is an important part of the communication process. The way we understand and interpret the world is fundamentally rooted in our physical bodies. So, how things feel drives our thoughts and behaviors, influences our comprehension and retention of information, and profoundly shapes our emotional connections. Haptic Brain/Haptic Brand looks at communication through the lens of neuroscience, exploring how media shapes the brain and, consequently, the way a brand is perceived. Dejan will present a deep dive into the discussion of ink-on-paper in comparison to digital communication. He will cover how the sense of touch influences readers’ perception and retention of brand and marketing communications. He will discuss the endowment effect, its impact on desire and why quality matters. Dejan will dig deeply into Bi-Lateral Literacy and its impact on how content is perceived. And, he will discuss how ‘constant distraction’ affects our ability to learn, to comprehend and to retain the vast amounts of information we consume.
